Echo Weaver
Echo Weaver is one of the most unique games released not only in October but also throughout 2026. The game features a very unusual time-loop mechanic that makes it somewhat similar to your traditional roguelike. However, it is not a roguelike, and while it does take you back to the main base every time the timer runs out or you die, the overall experience is quite different. Echo Weaver is a time-loop Metroidvania with puzzle and exploration elements.
In this game, each cycle gives you only a limited amount of time to explore, investigate your surroundings, and uncover the secrets of the world. However, for some players, this mechanic may start to get boring, as the time available during each run is quite limited. Thankfully, the game does offer some pretty solid shortcuts that connect different areas to the main base, so the repeated journeys do not become too frustrating.
There are also some pretty solid traversal mechanics, making exploration a genuinely fun experience. However, one of the major downsides is going to be the lack of guidance the game offers. You are often left to figure things out on your own, which can make progression somewhat confusing. Other than that, it is a pretty solid title that is absolutely worth checking out. For players who enjoy games like Outer Wilds and traditional Metroidvanias, Echo Weaver is a compelling option.
Forever Ago
Forever Ago is arguably one of the best indie games released in October 2026. It is a reflective road-trip adventure about grief, regret, love, and the possibility of finding a new beginning. In this game, you follow Alfred, a man whose life has been drastically changed by a personal tragedy, as he sets off on a journey north in search of redemption.
The experience revolves around exploration, environmental interactions, and storytelling rather than conventional action. Alfred carries an instant camera that lets you capture photographs of your surroundings. It also allows you to preserve memories and solve environmental puzzles.
Along the way, you will meet different characters, learn about their lives, and explore the experiences that have shaped them. The game’s emphasis on small moments, human connections, and beautiful scenery makes it an appealing choice for players looking for something slower and more contemplative. It is a particularly good option for those who enjoy narrative-driven adventures and want something that focuses more on its characters and storytelling than conventional gameplay challenges.
Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy
Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy concludes the Remothered trilogy, bringing the story to an end. This is a survival horror game featuring the journey of Susan Harper as she searches for her daughter. She accompanies her husband, but the two get separated almost at the beginning of the game, leaving Susan to continue her search on her own.
This game puts a great emphasis on survival rather than action. Once a chase begins, you will have to think about how to lose the enemy’s attention and where to hide. The game does allow you to hit enemies with certain weapons, but after a couple of uses, these weapons break, meaning you cannot rely on them to eliminate your pursuers.
The gameplay revolves around puzzle-solving and surviving encounters with the stalkers, with some familiar elements that fans of games like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Requiem will appreciate. As you progress, new mechanics, including hypnosis abilities, unlock and give you additional ways to investigate your surroundings and uncover clues. It is worth trying for fans of classic survival horror who appreciate a slower, more suspenseful approach to horror, particularly those interested in atmospheric storytelling and elaborate mysteries.
Probably Stolen
Probably Stolen is a cyberpunk shopkeeping simulator that puts players in charge of a rather questionable pawnshop aboard a massive space station. The game is set in a dystopian future divided by wealth, corruption, and competing factions. You play as a former scavenger trying to keep a small business running in an environment where almost everything has a questionable origin.
What makes Probably Stolen interesting is how it combines the familiar satisfaction of running a shop with a much darker narrative and a surprising amount of moral ambiguity. Customers can include revolutionaries, suspicious security operatives, and members of the station’s wealthy elite, each bringing their own problems and opportunities. It is worth trying for those who enjoy management games with a narrative twist, especially players who like the idea of building a business in a world where almost everything has a price and practically nothing is entirely legal.
Hubert
Another peaceful game on the list is Hubert. In this game, you play as a dog named Hubert and follow Lily, a sharp-witted young girl. Hubert takes on the responsibility of herding sheep across the countryside, navigating different challenges on the farm, and helping Lily along the way. It might initially seem like Hubert simply needs to keep the flock together, but there is a much bigger problem waiting for him.
As you progress, wolves begin to appear in the surrounding areas, and Hubert finds himself in trouble more often than you might expect. The story explores themes such as loyalty, companionship, and belonging through the perspective of a dog.
The gameplay revolves around exploration, scent tracking, herding, protecting the flock from danger, and taking down some wolves. It is worth trying for players looking for something wholesome and a little different from the usual adventure game formula. Honestly, this is the type of game you might enjoy playing after a long day, especially if you are looking for something relaxing without sacrificing an interesting adventure.
The Witch’s Bakery
Among the solid indie games released in October 2026, we have The Witch’s Bakery. It is a cozy narrative adventure RPG that follows Lunne, a cheerful young witch who arrives in modern-day Paris to open her very own bakery. However, her baking skills come with an unusual magical ability: she can see into people’s hearts and use her enchanted bread to help with their emotional struggles.
The gameplay is structured around three phases of daily life. During the day, players manage the bakery, prepare magical treats, and help customers with their problems. Evenings are spent exploring different Parisian neighbourhoods, meeting friends, discovering new activities, and occasionally venturing into the troubled hearts of the people Lunne encounters.
At night, players can rest, improve their magical abilities, and decorate the bakery. It is a solid choice for anyone who enjoys cozy games with a strong narrative focus, particularly those who appreciate character interactions and relaxing day-to-day activities. The combination of baking, magic, and emotional storytelling gives it a rather charming identity.
Silver Pines
Silver Pines is a side-scrolling survival horror adventure game that takes inspiration from classic horror games, blending eerie exploration, psychological storytelling, and resource management. Players take on the role of Red Walker, a private investigator who arrives in a forgotten American town called Silver Pines while searching for a missing musician named Eddie Velvet.
The game combines side-scrolling exploration with Metroidvania-style progression, challenging players to navigate interconnected environments, solve puzzles, and fight the creatures lurking throughout the town. Resource management is particularly important, as ammunition and other supplies are limited, forcing players to carefully think about which encounters are worth fighting and which ones are better avoided.
It is worth trying for fans of classic survival horror who enjoy games that prioritise atmosphere, exploration, and mystery over constant action. Its combination of interconnected environments, limited resources, and an unsettling mystery makes it an interesting option for players who appreciate a more traditional survival horror experience.
Best Non-Indie Releases of October 2026
The following a couple of best non-indie releases of October 2026:
Phantom Blade Zero
Arguably one of the most anticipated games of 2026, alongside major releases like GTA 6, Phantom Blade Zero has been in development for quite a while and has finally arrived. First revealed in 2023, the game is a spectacular kungfupunk action RPG combining traditional wuxia storytelling, dark fantasy, and fast-paced martial arts combat.
Players control Soul, a skilled warrior who has been framed for murdering his master and has just 66 days left to live. As he travels through the dangerous world of the Wulin, he must fend off assassins and uncover a conspiracy surrounding his master’s death. The gameplay focuses heavily on combat and exploration, with a greater emphasis on the former. There are multiple weapons you can use throughout the game, each offering different ways to approach combat and deal with enemies. The fast-paced action, impressive animations, and spectacular boss encounters make it one of the most impressive action games of the year.
Those who think this is going to be a challenging game are absolutely right, but it is considerably more forgiving than your traditional Soulsborne and Soulslike titles. There are even difficulty options, allowing players to choose an experience that suits their preferences. So, if you enjoy action games with fast-paced combat, impressive weapon variety, and cinematic boss fights, Phantom Blade Zero is a must-try.
Gears of War: E-Day
Gears of War: E-Day takes players back to Emergence Day, the terrifying moment when the Locust Horde first launched its devastating assault on humanity. Featuring Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, the game revisits the franchise’s origins and explores the events that shaped its iconic characters. Set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, this prequel promises brutal firefights, cinematic storytelling, and the series’ signature cover-based combat.
Instead of following an already established war against the Locust, players get to experience the very beginning of the invasion, when humanity is caught off guard and the threat is still largely unknown. This gives the game an opportunity to put greater emphasis on horror, tension, and survival, while also exploring the relationship between Marcus and Dom before they become the familiar soldiers fans know today.
It is absolutely worth trying for longtime Gears of War fans who want to revisit the origins of the series, as well as newcomers who enjoy cinematic third-person shooters. With that, the list of best indie and non-indie games of October 2026 comes to an end.
